Sidney Yavelle Acosta was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to the U.S. with her family when she was a child. Her main interests include the natural world, issues of race, ethnicity and female empowerment. Her perspective draws from being of two worlds, at times juxtaposing elements like naiveté and reality, simplicity and refinement, childlike renderings of sober adult themes etc. Through her work she analyzes her roots and experiences as a woman trying to navigate societal expectations, family life, love and trauma.
